Amalgam removal
Serving patients throughout Bath and surrounding areas
For more than 150 years amalgam has been used to repair millions of teeth across the world, but advanced dental techniques and materials have led to an increasing number of patients requesting their traditional fillings are replaced with a more modern and subtle alternative.
How amalgam removal works
While existing amalgam fillings are durable and safe, many people are now looking to replace their traditional fillings with a mercury-free composite that will blend seamlessly with the natural tooth. In many cases this is a straightforward process but before any treatment your dentist will need to examine your teeth to assess whether amalgam removal is in your best interest.
While the level of mercury in amalgam is very low when it is set into the tooth, removing the filling has the potential to increase exposure levels. During the removal process we use specific tools and techniques to shield the surrounding area, reduce contact time with loose amalgam and keep any risks to an absolute minimum.
Supplements such as Vitamin C, activated charcoal and selenium are associated with removing mercury build up, and these can be taken in the weeks leading up to amalgam removal. Glutathione supplements may also be used for a short time after treatment. Your dentist will offer advice.
What happens next?
Once the fillings have been carefully and safely removed we will refill the tooth using a combination of glass ionomers and composite. This modern alternative to amalgam bonds directly to the tooth, is mercury free, and the end result will blend with the existing tooth for an entirely natural result.
