Bridges
A bridge is a fixed replacement for a one or more missing teeth that is supported by crowns to the surrounding teeth. A bridge will restore your natural smile and can be used as a permanent and secure alternative to a denture.
How bridges work
A bridge is a false tooth, positioned between two crowns, which are bonded to the teeth either side, it can also be supported by dental implants. The restoration is normally created from porcelain and fused to either a metal or ceramic base.
Before a bridge can be fitted your dentist will have to remove a layer of the teeth either side to make space for the supporting crowns to be added. Impressions are then taken so that the restoration can be custom-made to fit your teeth comfortably. While the bridge is being prepared a temporary restoration may be fitted to protect the prepared teeth.
During your appointment the bridge is checked and adjusted to make sure it fits perfectly and it is fixed into place. Most bridges are a good fit but if your bite feels uncomfortable your dentist will be happy to check and adjust it for you.
Following treatment your dentist will give you aftercare advice to ensure you keep your bridge and the surrounding teeth strong and healthy.
The benefits of a bridge
A dental bridge is a natural looking way to fill spaces caused by missing teeth and help restore your confidence. A longer lasting alternative to dentures, dental bridges can restore your smile, improve your ability to chew, improve your speech and prevent your healthy teeth from moving out of position.
