Crowns
A crown is a permanent restoration used to cover and strengthen a damaged tooth to improve its appearance and functionality. Made from hard wearing material that can be colour matched to the surrounding teeth, a crown is an ideal solution when a tooth is badly damaged and can’t be filled.
How crowns work
A crown is a laboratory-made restoration to fix a damaged tooth. At Green Park Dental we offer crowns in a selection of materials including gold, porcelain bonded to metal as well as the latest in the metal-free alternatives that will blend perfectly with the surrounding teeth.
Before a crown can be fitted your dentist will need to remove a layer of the tooth to make space for the crown to be fitted and impressions will be taken so that the crown can be created to blend perfectly with the surrounding teeth. While you wait for your new crown a temporary restoration may be placed to protect the prepared tooth. Finally, you return to have the crown fitted. Most crowns fit perfectly but if your bite feels uncomfortable your dentist will be happy to check and adjust it for you.
Following treatment, good oral hygiene is important to keep the crown clean and the surrounding gums healthy. Your dentist will give you aftercare advice to ensure you keep your crown and the surrounding gum strong and healthy.
The benefits of a crown
Crowns are a highly effective long-term dental treatment. They act as a protective cover to preserve the healthy remaining section of the natural tooth. Crowns can be used to fix a range of dental problems, from replacing a large filling, restoring a badly cracked or heavily worn tooth, to rebuilding a tooth following root canal therapy or concealing a discoloured or misshapen tooth.
